Nicholas Kemp was an immigrant who was angered by the draft. He became one of the ringleaders, and after the riots, he was one of those arrested. The prisoners were taken to Camp Washburn in Milwaukee and then on to Camp Randall. After a month, Nicholas Kemp sought release, arguing that Abraham Lincoln had abused his power in suspending habeas corpus. He won in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, but the court did not enforce the ruling. Lincoln worried about this case and its national importance.
